Dogs love holidays at Watermill Cottages! And their owners love the cottages!
Enjoy holidays like they used to be in our dog-friendly, comfy cottages, each part of an 18thC watermill or a mill worker’s cottage. Green lane walks from your cottage door round a tranquil coastal valley and further afield. Woods, quiet water meadows, lawns, fields and a shallow trout stream to play in.
A short and pretty drive to Slapton Sands, dog-friendly all year round, with many other dog-friendly beaches within a 30 minute drive, and Dartmoor 45 minutes away. Close to the South West coast Path in a secret coastal valley between Slapton and Strete, and near many other pretty villages in the heart of S Hams AONB.
Plenty of dog-friendly pubs, cafes and restaurants to choose from – two dog-friendly pubs in Slapton and one in Strete to start with! It’s safe here, no through traffic, and a green lane beyond us.
We have a no firework policy and are rural so Watermill Cottages is the perfect location for nervous dogs in autumn.
We really welcome dogs and are flexible on number. Quack Cottage has the largest garden – it’s huge – and great for larger, more active dogs or great numbers.
There's free electric car charging for guests using electricity generated by our water turbine, and plenty of parking. All cottages have log burners and electric radiators and heaters so are cosy all year round. All logs are included. Private enclosed gardens (except for Mill Cottage) with bbq & outdoor furniture and shared stream side lawns with further seating. Call Christine & John on 01803 770219
Quack Cottage is a traditional, ‘chocolate box’ Devon cottage: exposed beams, wooden window seats, thick walls, & a wood burning stove in the stone fireplace. Tiled with rugs. The kitchen has a stable door to the garden, and door to the sitting room; it’s tiled. Festooned with roses, jasmine, wisteria & honeysuckle, it has a huge, private, south-facing, fenced garden on the riverbank. An old bread oven (non-functioning!) in the thick chimney walls adds to its charm. Sleeps up to 4, one double, two singles.
Barleycorn Cottage is in the old mill itself, full of character with an original grindstone in the kitchen floor & massive oak beams throughout. Wood-burner, thick walls, high airy ceilings, deep slate sills. Stream & valley views. Sleeps up to 4; both double & twin rooms are spacious, with room for a further bed or cot. Its fully-fenced garden, part lawn, part flower slopes, was the mill pond. A gate at the top leads to the orchard. Stable door from porch to the garden.
Romantic Rose Cottage is a pretty, picture-postcard Devon cottage with long sweeping views across the valley from its large south-facing deck & fenced garden. Elm panelling & window seats in kitchen (tiled) and sitting room (tiled with rugs), plus a log burner in both stone fireplaces. Sleeps 2-4 in a double with en-suite bathroom and a twin with en-suite shower room.
Light and sunny Mill Cottage is a former granary next to the brook. Outstanding views downstream of the old bridge, garden & valley. Beams & log-burner combine with a comfy, modern style – easy open plan living/dining upstairs; bedrooms, bathroom & further loo downstairs. Perfect for wildlife watching on the brook. Unfenced patio & potted herb & flower garden, picnic table & bbq. Sleeps 2-6 or 5 plus cot.
Crownwheel Cottage is a ‘Tardis’ cottage, bigger inside than it seems outside! An airy converted barn it’s a favourite with groups of friends or family; spacious, well laid-out & room for everyone. Open plan living + dining kitchen. Romantic downstairs double with stream below the window; full size bunk bed room with space for further bed; bathroom & further loo. Upstairs light large twin with own huge bathroom. Space for a further bed. Private, fenced, streamside patio – its gate opens to a lovely stroll through wildflower woods to the log seat by the ruined wears & waterfalls. Sleeps 6-8.

I have just come back from a week with my partner and 3 dogs in Rose cottage. It is beautiful. No TV or mobile phone signal. We were invited to see the apple pressing by Christine and John. It was nice to meet other people staying and the children we spoke to were loving their holiday. We did lots of walking and reading. It's perfect. We will be back. Dogs loved walking in the stream
