Nestling in the heart of the quintessential English village of Aldborough, these former stables, adjacent to the owner’s home, have been carefully converted to retain many original features. This detached, single-storey property has a stone flagged, open-plan living area, with exposed roof trusses, and overlooks the garden and Studforth Hill, the site of an ancient Roman amphitheatre. The picturesque village of Aldborough is steeped in history, with parts of the Roman defences, two spectacular mosaic pavements, pottery, ornaments and coins all on display at the English Heritage Museum, which is around the corner from the cottage. Standing close to the village hall is the battle cross commemorating the Battle of Boroughbridge, and a plaque on the village green commemorates the RAF crew who lost their lives but avoided crashing into the village. The stocks in front of this plaque were removed from the square in Boroughbridge, when the medieval church there was demolished in 1851.The red and blue striped maypole, formerly a ship’s mast, is permanently situated on the green ready for the annual Mayday fête. There is a friendly village pub serving traditional meals, and dogs are welcome.
A variety of inns, restaurants and shops can be found in the neighbouring town of Boroughbridge, and just 5 minutes away is a local farm shop, which sells Yorkshire produce, and has a café serving home baking and a children’s play area. The cottage provides a luxury base from which to explore the surrounding area. Visit Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal Water Garden, Beningborough Hall and Castle Howard. Explore the market towns at Ripon and Knaresborough, the elegant spa town of Harrogate and the vibrant, ancient, walled city of York, with its abundance of world-renowned attractions. Family fun can be found at Brimham Rocks and Lightwater Valley, and the Yorkshire Dales, the North Yorkshire Moors and the coastal towns of Scarborough and Whitby are all easily accessible. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
