If you are looking for somewhere to stay that ticks the boxes for not only being dog friendly but a couples break, family holiday, or even just a quiet retreat for you and your dogs then this is the place! We loved the fact that Buttermilk Cottage use to house the owners goats and although renovated to the highest standard with modern features still retains the original charm.
On first impression the finishing touches of this delightful cottage make it feel luxurious, whilst having all the essentials you could need. We loved having a dishwasher and added extras like dog biscuits and holiday collar tags were a great surprise. The indoor setup is comfy and compact with the loft area being a great bedroom like den for children. The bathroom is well laid out for the size of the room and although the bath is a little smaller than normal the owners are installing a hot tub in the garden so if you like a soak you will be well catered for. The main bedroom is a great size and we haven't even mentioned the massive bed yet.
Outdoors you will find not one but two areas just for your use. A lawned garden through one door and a gravel area with bench outside the double front doors. You can choose to link the two areas or access seperately which makes it a really flexible layout for dogs. The location of the cottage could not have been more perfect for us. Set in the quiet devon countryside with walks straight out of the door surrounded by woodland, rivers, ponds and fields.
If you are looking to take small people then there are endless activities to keep them busy, from helping with the animals to making clay creations or playing on the many swings. You can even take the boat out for a spin around the pond. After a day in the country getting wet and muddy the last thing you want to be doing is waiting for your dogs to dry or trying to cover your entire cottage floor with towels for fear of making a mess. But they have this covered. With an outside dog bath and not just a great running shower but a warm one at that.
When going out for a walk your spoilt for choice. On our first day we walked over to the Dunsland National Parkland. With lots of open space it is great for dogs but keep them on a longline due to livestock. A quick car ride or longer walk gets you to Cookworthy Forest. Here you will find acres of Forestry Commission land with easy to walk paths all set out for you. Wether you are an experienced walker, a family with small people, or even have a decent off road buggy these walks are suitable for all. The forest provides hours of fun for both dogs and children with waterways, fallen branches and so much to explore. It can be a short walk, a longer one, or take a picnic and make a day of it.
When it comes to visiting the coast you can either choose to head North or West. North being the wonderful beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe. West being Bude, Sandymoutb Bay, Widemouth Bay etc. We opted to head to Westward Ho! A popular spot for surfing and swimming, we also love it for dogs. The only place name in the UK with an exclamation mark in it, but well deserved. With varying landscape including golden sand, pebbles and burrows it makes for an interesting walk. When the tide is out the beach is incredibly wide meaning if you go at a quieter time you have lots of space for dogs who need it.
Like many beaches, during the summer dogs are not allowed on part of the beach but if you drive down to the Northam Burrows or even just walk round and enter the beach further down you miss out that part. There are plenty of parking options either around town or in the Northam Burrows.
Our top recommendation for dining is a charming little place in town called Tea On The Green. Check out their weekend cake reveals, they taste as good as they look. We would happily travel here just to visit for lunch. The portion sizes are huge and the food is amazing. Just make sure you have no other meals planned for the rest of the day though as you wont need to eat for a week. Of course we sat outside where you can have your dog with you.
The last place we visited for walking was Ferworthy Reservoir in Chagford, Devon. It was a little further from the property but we did this after we had packed up the cottage to head home. With trails of 4 to 5 km each or mix them together for a longer stroll. This is a great spot for all walking abilities as the reservoir is just a stones throw from the car park with fantastic views and benches right away. For those not wanting to walk you can leave them here with a picnic. You can walk the entire loop around the reservoir or explore in the woods.
With clearly marked routes it is easy to find your way. There are lots of hidey holes making it a great choice for reactive dogs as you can easily move out of eye sight.
Just 20 minutes off the A30.
We had a fabulous stay in Devon. Obviously times right now are tough and we all want to stay safe. At Puddleduck Valley activities have been reduced and everything is socially distanced. The TV remote was wrapped in fresh cling film and everything clean. You can certainly relax and enjoy your break away without worrying about the virus. Staying out of the way of people entirely if you desire. This also makes it a great place to go for dogs with extra needs and our reactive girl stayed calm and happy throughout. We wouldn't hesitate to go back, we felt incredibly welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
Places to eat
Locally we found that Waitrose in Holsworthy stocked everything we needed for a shop. Normally we would also try out a local pub or restaurant but due to the covid situation we were choosing to only get takeaway food. However we were told by locals that the Bickford Arms is a great place for good pub grub and super welcoming of dogs. Other dog friendly choices close by are the Black River Inn and The Rydon Inn. Dogs are currently only allowed outdoors at The Rydon Inn.
Buttermilk cottage from £71 per night
Stable Cottage from £67 per night
