Grade II listed Carn Brea Castle dates back to the 14th century, and was extensively remodelled in the 18th century as a hunting lodge in the style of a castle. Originally built as a chapel in 1379, its use as a beacon for ships was recorded in 1898 when stipulated in the lease, the tenant agreeing to show a light in the north-facing window. Today, it is a popular restaurant and a frequent favourite with visitors as a great viewing point.
The industrial town of Redruth is close by with shops, pubs, restaurants, a cinema, and the wide sandy surfing beach at Portreath is just a short 15-minute drive. Explore the long beach and sand dunes at Hayle, as well as its wide estuary, which is a bird watchers haven. The magical town and harbour of St Ives, famous for its golden sandy beaches, can be reached by the scenic coastal train that runs from St Erth.
For walkers, Tehidy Country Park offers 250 acres of tranquil walks and lakes, whilst the South West Coast Path provides some of Cornwall’s best scenic walks. The area has some rugged walks and bridle paths steeped in true Cornish mining traditions, evident with old mining houses dotted around the countryside. A true Poldark experience as it is the heart of the old tin mining country. Bike enthusiasts will love the nearby trail along the old tram line, which is now a designated cycle trail from Portreath on the north coast, to Devoran on the south coast. Cycle hire can also be found locally. Beach 5 miles. Shop and pub 2 miles, restaurant 1 mile.
