Nestled on the edge of the village of Alfriston, Danny Cottage is a beautiful Grade II listed, 16th-century timber framed, traditional thatched cottage. Full of character, this detached cottage has many original features, including a plethora of beams (some low), brick and wooden floors, and exposed walls. The fireplace, complete with a wood burner, is warm and welcoming in the winter months. During the summer, you can take full advantage of the lawned garden which then leads into an orchard and wild area with stunning views across the valley where you can spot Berwick’s church.

A paradise for walkers, cyclists and lovers of the countryside, footpaths abound from the doorstep, including The South Downs Way. Alfriston is surrounded by the South Downs and Cuckmere Valley, and is just within the South Downs National Park. It is one of the oldest villages in Sussex and very picturesque; one of the pubs was a famous smugglers’ haunt. You can visit Alfriston Clergy House (National Trust), a 14th-century Wealden hall house and the first property purchased by The National Trust.

Other attractions in the area include St Andrews Church, known as the ’Cathedral of the South Downs’, and Drusillas Zoo Park, widely known as the best small zoo in Europe. Arlington Reservoir, a dedicated nature reserve and one of the finest trout fishing localities in the southeast, is great for anglers of all abilities. Beaches can be found at Brighton, Seaford, Eastbourne and Hastings, and don’t miss the famous view of the Seven Sisters at Cuckmere Haven. Horse riding and golf available locally. Beach 4½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.
