Situated in Ness, a widespread district in the northern part of Lewis, with the famous Butt of Lewis and its majestic Stevenson Lighthouse only a short distance from the cottage. Also the Eoropie Dunes Play Park, which is set in the sand dunes, makes a great day out for kids and adults alike, and Eoropie Beach is great for surfing. Port of Ness Harbour, which was featured in Peter May’s murder mystery novel, The Blackhouse, is only a short drive from Cherry Tree Cottage.
This is an ideal location for exploring all of the island. The main town of Stornoway is 25 miles away, which has much to offer in shopping, restaurants and museums, and also An Lanntair, the island’s art centre and cultural venue which features a 50-seater restaurant, art gallery, shop, and auditorium seating over two hundred. It is also the island’s entertainment centre and regularly hosts performances by musicians as well as plays, talks, and films.
Enjoy days out visiting the historical sites of the Callanish Stones. Dun Carloway Broch, an ancient Iron Age structure, is worth a visit, as are the Ness Heritage Centre, full of information about the island, and Bosta Beach at Great Bernera. Also within easy reach is Geaerrannan Blackhouse Village, which is a coastal crofting village, or just enjoy the pristine white sandy beaches on the west coast, notably Uig Bay where the famous Lewis Chessmen were found, intricately carved from walrus ivory, and now housed in the British Museum.
There is an abundance of wildlife to be seen, and this is a birdwatcher’s paradise. For the fishermen, there is loch and sea angling, or for the more energetic, hill walking with the challenge of The Clisham, the highest mountain in the Western Isles, standing at 2,621 feet. Boat trips depart from Stornoway, Uig and Great Bernera for whale and dolphin watching, and also further afield to the Shiants Isles and St Kilda, the remotest part of the British Isles.
The area has so much to offer with dramatic landscapes, seascapes, sunsets, dark skies, the Northern Lights and more. Beach 3 miles. Shop and pub 50 yards, restaurant 6 miles.
