The amenities of Middleham are close-at-hand, including excellent traditional pubs and local eateries. Known as “the Windsor of the North”, Middleham is nestled between the rivers Ure and Cover. Its Georgian and Victorian building are dominated by a 12th century castle, which was owned by the “Kingmaker” Earl of Warwick during the Wars of the Roses. In 1471 it became the principal northern residence of England's last Plantagenet king, Richard III, following his marriage to Warwick’s youngest daughter, Anne Neville. Wonderful walking can be enjoyed from the doorstep, and market towns such as Richmond, Leyburn, Masham, famous for the Theakston's and Black Sheep breweries, and Hawes, the home of Wensleydale cheese, are within easy reach.
Please note that Middleham is a working rural town with farm traffic and horses on the roads from early in the morning.
