Carlton Cottage

Carlton Cottage is within easy reach of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its historic towns and villages.. Dating back to the 16th century, Carlton Cottage is a traditional, thatched clay cottage and is one of the only remaining thatches in the row, following a fire that devastated the enclave in the last century. Originally built for agricultural workers who tended the land owned by Hessett Hall, this village dates back over 1000 years and is featured in the Doomsday book. This charming cottage retains many of its original features while offering all the modern conveniences needed for a restful stay. The current owner is an artist and this is evident in the well designed and appointed rooms. A private courtyard garden, which truly is a sun trap, provides a great space to relax in after a day of sightseeing.
Nearby Bury St Edmunds is a must, rich in history it offers many attractions including the Abbey Ruins and runs several events throughout the year including the not to be missed, Bury St Edmunds Christmas Market. Close by lies the medieval villages of Lavenham and Long Melford, popular with tourists and locals alike. Nature lovers and bird watchers will be spoilt for choice but should make time for a trip to Harwick Heath, a large park with some 55 acres to explore. For a change of pace, visit Newmarket for a day at the races, or for one of their many festivals and events. Or, be in the heart of Cambridge in just under an hour and explore the Fitzwilliam Museum, take a guided walking tour, or go punting on the river. Whatever you decide to do, after a day exploring Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, you can be sure of a good night’s sleep at cosy Carlton Cottage, where a warm welcome awaits your return.
