St Petroc

Sleeps: 6

St Petroc is a truly unique and eccentric property shrouded in history. Built on the site of a 6th century chantry, this is a peaceful and special holiday retreat set in 1.5 acres of park-like gardens and surrounded by open fields and farmland.
As soon as you arrive at St. Petroc you know you will be staying at a very special property. This luxury holiday home makes an instant and lasting impression, with crenelated stone walls and a copper dome. Inside, there’s plenty of space for all of your family or holiday group to relax, with a spacious living room featuring a stone fireplace, as well as a grand and stately sitting room with an attractive domed ceiling. There’s also a book-lined snug with a parquet floor, with windows that look out onto the large and well-established garden. The kitchen and breakfast room are finished and furnished to a very high standard, with a central island the perfect place for the whole clan to gather after a day spent exploring.
The property is reputed to be the site where St Petroc of Cornwall stayed during his pilgrimages across Devon. The waters of the well he dug there were supposed to be used to baptise and heal the pilgrims who came to visit him. According to folklore, he carried the well stones himself that can today still be seen around St Petroc, including the well cap stone found underneath the elegant domed ceiling in the living room.
Outside, the large and landscaped gardens create a real feeling of seclusion and space. You can sit and enjoy a drink or a meal on the large patio, or wander through the gardens. There’s even a small wildlife pond. With extensive space to both relax and entertain, St Petroc carefully combines a feeling of total seclusion, whilst being close to the amenities and coastline nearby. This holiday at a glance

Attractions and nearby amenities

  • Whether you want to stroll across a majestic moor, walk along a babbling river to the sea or perhaps spend a few hours birdwatching, Exmoor offers plenty of activities for lovers of the great outdoors. This National Park has over 34 miles of coastline, including the longest stretch of coastal woodland.
  • The coastline of North Devon is well-known for its golden sands, including the beaches at Woolacombe, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay. Unbroken Atlantic breakers crash onto the beaches here making this a surfer’s paradise. You can bring your own board and wetsuit, or hire equipment during your stay.
  • Henry Williamson’s novel ‘Tarka the Otter’ was set in North Devon, and you can visit some of the locations in the book along the Tarka Trail. This figure of eight footpath stretches for 163 miles and takes you through constantly changing landscape. You can hire bicycles if you prefer to travel on two wheels.
  • The south loop of the Tarka Trail takes you to Barnstaple. This ancient town is the largest in North Devon and is situated on the River Taw. There’s a rabbit warren of narrow streets and alleys in the town centre, which is pedestrianised, and you can also catch the Tarka Line train here, which takes you along the river valleys through some very beautiful views.
  • Villages don’t come much more picturesque than Clovelly. You’ll probably recognise the steep cobbled street from a famous television advert! This was once a thriving fishing harbour and you can still sample local lobster and crab here.
  • Head towards Ilfracombe to visit Watermouth Castle for a day that the whole family will enjoy. This country house comes with its very own theme park, with rides and attractions to keep you all entertained, from sedate merry-go-rounds to white-knuckle rides like the Thunder Luge Toboggan Run.
