River Cottages

Dogs: 2

Sleeps: 11

Relaxed, dog friendly self-catering holidays on the Norfolk Broads. Five delightful riverside cottages in Wroxham

Our five cottages may differ in size, but they're all furnished to a superb standard. All five lead straight on to the water's edge. Each has its own private landing stage and a rowing boat that's yours to mess about in all day long. If you fancy something bigger, there's a boat-hire yard less than five minutes' walk away. That puts mile after mile of quiet rivers and broads within reach.

Each cottage has been meticulously decorated in a relaxed, modern style. The mood is comfortable and homely, with plenty of space to spread out – for family games, chatting over the day's fishing triumphs or using the free internet and Wi-Fi to catch up with the outside world. Or maybe not. When they're living by the river, guests discover that what happens elsewhere is not nearly as appealing as it once seemed. The river and Wroxham cast their spell. Time slows down. Deadlines, schedules, and to-do lists belong to another world. Discover peace and adventure on the Norfolk Broads If you're new to the Norfolk Broads, its meandering, watery scale could take you by surprise. Life here is an endless string of inlets, tributaries and backwaters – a world of hidden cottages, ancient windmills, reed beds and birdsong. That's why people love it. This is a landscape in which you can lose yourself … wind down … slip into the rhythm of watery life. There's no rush on the Broads. The maximum speed on the water is five miles an hour – a snappy walking pace if you did it on foot, a leisurely, watch-the-world-float-by pottering when you're in a boat. In this liquid landscape of lapping water and wind-blown reed heads, you notice every little detail. The silvery glint of an eel … the patient stealth of the heron … the laughter of a passing boat and the silence that returns in its wake. Precious moments, every one of them. Wroxham, watery heart of the Broads For Norfolk Broads enthusiasts, Wroxham is boating central. This is the lively village of chandlers and chip shops, wharves and waterside dining. Here, river and commerce are entwined. A guidebook would say that Wroxham straddles the River Bure. That's an understatement. When you're there, it feels as if Wroxham is woven into the River Bure. Or that the River Bure is woven into Wroxham. You can't tell because the warp and weft of land and river are woven as one. Much of the village is more water than land, a maze-like network of waterways, inlets, channels and backwaters. In fact Wroxham has so many branches and inlets, virtually every house in the centre of the village has its own private waterfront. Our five riverside cottages are in the heart of this liquid playground. Wroxham's shops, pub, restaurants and entertainments are less than five minutes' walk from your door. And if walking seems too ordinary – too much like everyday life – you can take a boat. Which is handy because Wroxham has just about everything you need. Wroxham is the village (population roughly 1,500) that enjoys the facilities of a tiny town. With a pub, ten-plus restaurants, and more than a week's worth of varied take-away venues, you're spoilt for choice. We know them all, so we can tell you which ones we recommend. The village is also home to the world's largest village shop / department store. Roys of Wroxham is the multi-site retailer that sells everything from fresh food to bags of nails. If Roys doesn't sell it, you probably don't need it. Away from the commercial bustle, Wroxham's boatyards and backwaters call. It doesn't take long to find a quiet spot to call your own – somewhere to enjoy an ice cream in the sunshine and watch the world go by.
