Redgate Smithy B&B
Redgate Smithy is a quality B&B well situated on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor, just above the beautiful Golitha Falls. We are in the heart of SE Cornwall; ideal for exploring Cornwall, visiting friends or relatives, or for if you are here on business. Golitha Falls are a tranquil place, peaceful and mysterious. A King of Cornwall once died here. Miners once toiled here. It is a place where legend seems to linger in the woods.
"Dog Friendly" is a byword here at Redgate Smithy and we consider ourselves very welcoming to our four-legged friends. A friendly dog is our Special Guest, and we have a very friendly Sprocker Spaniel called Brydy, who is always happy to meet all of her guests, both dogs and humans alike! We do not charge for your dog to stay with us.
Built around 200 years ago, Redgate Smithy is now a welcoming and professionally run Bed & Breakfast, with attractive cottage style bedrooms, and very comfortable beds! Each bedroom has its own Freeview Digital TV, FREE Superfast FTTP Wi-fi access, and tea & coffee making facilities.
We offer a very extensive and tasty award winning breakfast menu. Breakfast is served in the light and airy conservatory, which you are also free to use at any time. Watch the birds while you relax and eat!
There is a lovely woodland garden for guests' use, with a patio and other seating areas - sit back and listen to the buzzards mewing as they soar overhead!
Our local village is St.Cleer, near Liskeard, and we are very close to Siblyback Lake and to the World Heritage Site for Cornish Mining at Minions. Birds and wildlife abound on and around the moor, and there are excellent walking, riding, hacking, and fishing facilities locally. We can supply you with some excellent walking routes and maps.
Bodmin Moor is the hidden heart of Cornwall, and has a rich, rugged and beautiful landscape and heritage. Among the tors found near Minions, there is the famous Cheesewring, above the old granite quarry, and the varied rock formations of Sharp Tor and Kilmar Tor. The area abounds with nineteenth century industrial archaeology including the extensive mining remains up on the moor, the Wheal Victoria Copper Mine down by Golitha Falls, and the remains of the fascinating Liskeard and Caradon Railway, which linked the heights of Bodmin Moor with Looe on the coast. The very pretty Looe Valley Line still runs from Liskeard to Looe.
There are also several ancient Neolithic settlements to be found on this part of Bodmin Moor, including the hill-top strong-hold of Stowe' Pound; several stone circles including the well-known Hurlers; and many other ancient sites and burial chambers such as Trethevy Quoit.
There are also excellent pubs and restaurants in the local and surrounding areas that we recommend for your evening meals.
Redgate Smithy is easily accessible from both the A30 on Bodmin Moor (a beautiful drive down the lane from Jamaica Inn at Bolventor), or the A38 from Liskeard.
We look forward to meeting you!
