Mabel’s Cottage – A Perfect New Year Escape

We chose Mabel’s Cottage for our New Year break, for Mark to secretly propose and we honestly couldn’t imagine staying anywhere better.

Dog Friendly? Absolutely.

We’re seasoned hikers who travel for months each year, and never have we stayed somewhere where our dog was so thoroughly thought of. The cottage is truly dog-centric: towels for muddy paws, comfy beds, plenty of bowls, and a brilliant welcome pack for our dog Jasper—biscuits, dog-safe chocolate, tennis balls, poop bags, and more. Outstanding.

The Cottage

Wow. This is, without doubt, the best-equipped stay we’ve experienced. Adventurous cook? You’ll be in heaven. There’s every conceivable pot, pan, gadget and appliance—microwave, air fryer, slow cooker, and more. Just bring ingredients and you can make anything you fancy. Seating for six inside or plenty of space in the garden.

For hikers returning wet and muddy, the utility room is a dream—washing machine, dryer, drying space, and warm radiators throughout. The lounge is wonderfully cosy with a log burner, a large leather sofa bed, deep armchairs and Sky TV.

Water pressure is fantastic and piping hot—just note that a long bath briefly cools the radiators while the system heats up again.

Upstairs you’ll find a gorgeous double room, a charming twin, and a snug/reading room with games. Fast Wi-Fi and excellent central heating made the whole house toasty warm. Perfect for four, and still comfortable with six using the sofa bed.

The Garden

Fully enclosed and perfectly secure, so dogs can potter freely. Access is easy with both a small pedestrian gate and a large gate for the car. There’s outdoor seating with lovely views across the glen. The birdlife is brilliant—feeders everywhere—and a pair of eagles even nest in the field behind. With barely any light pollution, nights are spectacular; a superb spot for stargazing and the Northern Lights.

Location

Ideally placed for exploring Skye’s dramatic scenery—mountains, beaches, cliffs and wildlife—yet peaceful and secluded. Some cars pass en route to the Fairy Glen, but traffic is light, slow, and inaudible thanks to double glazing.

The Fairy Glen is only a ten-minute stroll away, and the summit of Beinn Edra on the Trotternish ridge is less than a three-hour hike from the door. Uig is a pleasant 30-minute walk, and we can’t recommend The Ferry Inn highly enough—what a night!

Hosts

You only know how good hosts really are when things go wrong. We had a small hiccup (nothing to do with the cottage), and Allan and Frances were on it instantly—responsive, friendly and proactive. You couldn’t ask for better.

In Summary

Mabel’s Cottage is warm, welcoming, peaceful, exceptionally equipped and brilliantly dog friendly—an ideal base for wildlife watching and exploring the Isle of Skye. A true home from home, and a credit to Allan and Frances.

Not dog tolerant, dog friendly! Fabulous place to stay with your four legged or two legged friends!

Because they have gone out of their way to make the dogs’ stay special and provided an amazing welcome pack, beds, blankets, towels, and more. They also provide an amazing welcome pack for the humans too!! Nothing was too much trouble.

A lovely, warm, welcoming cottage. The house and gardens are totally dog friendly and the welcome pack for both humans and canines was fabulous. We enjoyed or stay in Mable's Cottage very much, as did our two greyhounds, Ellie and Annie.
