I recently walked my labrador on the beach and he ate some charcoal left by a barbeque. Within 12 hours he was vomiting a lot and became very lethargic. I visited the emergency vet who could feel a lump and suggested the charcoal would clear normally. Within six more hours he was extremely unwell and had to be taken in for emergency surgery.
The small bits of charcoal had lodged in his intestine and soaked up all the available fluids, then started to give off toxins. As a result a 40cm (1.5 ft) length of his intestine had died and had to be cut out. He is lucky to be alive and is still not in the clear.
PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN YOUR DOG EATS CHARCOAL - DON'T DELAY IN VISITING YOUR VET IF THEY BECOME UNWELL!
The early years of a guide dog
Guide dogs are appreciated for their valuable contribution to society but few realise the severity of training that they go through in their early years.
