Recommendation for Northumberland.....Shilbottle, near Alnwick. Self catering house. Sleeps up to 6. Really clean and comfortable, Enclosed garden, bridle path just outside front gate, miles of walks across local fields. They ask you to keep dog downstairs, but there is a stairgate, so not a problem. We have just come back from a lovely week there. So many miles of sandy beaches, doggy heaven! www.aspaceto.be or henryandlucy@aspaceto.be

We had the same problem at Dunster Castle. It doesn't allow dogs inside (perfectly acceptable and normal) but it doesn't allow dogs even on leads in the gardens. I was told that dogs are allowed in the park. which is beyond a wire fence, adjoining the main road and inaccessible with the wheelchair!!! We were there on a day when the temperature was 27 degrees so leaving the dog in the car was NOT happening and there were no parking spaces disabled or otherwise with any shade.

The National Trust needs to overhaul it's outlook on dogs as I won't be going to their properties or renewing my membership until they do.

Anna beat me to the punch. I too took not only our Westie Molly, but my 89yr old, wheelchair bound mother to Cheddar last month. The folks were most friendly and accommodating and when my husband stayed outside with Molly we were told she was most welcome to come with us wherever we went.

The weather was hot and it was wonderful not to either forgo the attractions or risk heatstroke by having to put Molly in the car while we ate. A wonderful time was had by all. There were a lot of owners and their dogs (not one of which I saw misbehave)enjoying their time in Cheddar and a real family atmosphere abounded. Congratulations to the whole community who made us welcome they are on my Go To Again list and I'm singing their praises to all my friends with and without dogs.

We used to use the Travelodge at St Austell when entering the UKA Cornwall agility shows, but no longer. On the last occasion we had booked several months in advance, telephoned to make sure we could take the dog, been told, as usual, that the charge per dog was £10 per night, but on arrival the receptionist demanded an extra £10 per dog per night as the fee had gone up! I guess they don't really want dogs and this is their way of discouraging them. Have since found a lovely dog friendly cottage nearby, works out cheaper and is lovely.

I had a great Christmas break in Cornwall too, with my Cockapoo, Poppy.

I write a regular (ish) column for CD-Traveller "One Woman and her Dog"

The cornwall tips for doggy travel and accommodation (also linking to this site) are all on the article, which can be found <a href="http://www.cd-traveller.com/2009/01/06/one-woman-and-her-dog-2/" title="here" rel="nofollow">

Enjoy!

I am amazed at that cost, I as yet have not used any places as I have had only about for six months a assistance dog so I ben told all will be fine for me with no charge or I hope not, but watch this space

My friend and I stayed at the Travel Lodge at Cirencester recentley when our dog display team performed at Westonbirt. We were charged £20 for each of our dogs. in effect paying for 2 specialist cleans for one room. That seemed rather excessive. However I think the charge is 'per visit' so if you are staying several nights it's not so bad. Swings and roundabouts maybe?

I totally agree with Keith about Travelodge having had the same experience last year when the doubling of the charge was introduced very suddenly and with no warning on the website. I also wrote and got the same reply about cleaning costs. I regularly go to Yorkshire from Sussex with two children and small dog and used Travelodge overnight to break the long journey however this half term we are booked into a Welcome Inn at no extra charge for our dog. I was prepared to pay £10 at travelodge but no way £20!!
